Automation and Cybersecurity: Horner’s WebMI and the Industrial Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) was first recognized as a concept in 1999. It refers to the ever-growing web of network-enabled devices we interact with on a daily basis. From smartphones and wearable technology like Fitbit, to cars and streetlights, a vast multitude of objects and machines now have wireless Internet connectivity and data-tracking capabilities.

At Horner Automation, we have always made it a priority to adapt our automation systems to the latest computing technology. We have made no exception with the IoT. Horner has stepped into the industrial IoT with WebMI, our new software that allows you to access your Horner OCS from your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

According to projections from research firm Gartner, the number of connected devices in the industrial IoT is expected to double -- and, in the automotive sector, grow by five times. As the industrial sector becomes more mobile and better networked, Horner will be there to provide wireless industrial automation solutions to meet your needs.

As convenient as the IoT can be, it does not come without concerns. As the number of connected devices increases, the risks to cybersecurity increase. What happens if your network goes down? What happens if someone gains access to controls or data they aren’t permitted to access? Events like these could result in corruption of important data, loss of productivity, system failure, or hazardous working conditions.

We have taken these risks into consideration with the development of WebMI. External threats to your networked automation devices are cut off by128-bit SSL encryption and industry standard hash security. Internally, you never have to worry about WebMI putting undue strain on your network. Because WebMI is enabled through the microSD card in your OCS controller, it can operate within your existing IT structure without overstressing it. This ensures continued network uptime.

WebMI also includes features that protect your networked devices through a series of permissions under your control. Devices must be registered in WebMI to have any access to your OCS, the operations it controls, or the data it collects. You can also restrict the screens that can be accessed by each registered device -- and what can be controlled from those screens. This ensures you have full control over access, preventing unauthorized or untrained staff from accessing sensitive data or processes.

Horner is proud to continuously evolve to meet the technological needs of the industrial sector. As the web and automation continue to come together through the industrial IoT, we will continue to provide solutions to improve productivity, efficiency, and safety.

For over 20 years Horner has lived up to their reputation of being known as a company that produces strong engineered hardware solutions. Customers and potential customers see us as a company that makes our OCS (Operator Control Station) all-in-one controllers, I/O solutions and communications products. In fact, as the originator of the all-in-one design, the Horner name is synonymous with automation controllers with a built-in operator interface and I/O. Because our team at Horner has continued to build upon our successes in the market place, we have steadily expanded the product offerings to our current family of OCS controllers, which include a full range of products from 2-1/2&dquot; screens all the way up to 22&dquot; screens; all with varying I/O options. We are proud of the fact that Horner does industrial automation hardware well.

Horner has just unveiled software that provides a revolutionary new way to remotely monitor and control machines. The Horner OCS‐Web family of software solutions has launched. With our first SaaS (Software as a Service) feature (WebMI), we have introduced customers to a simple, cost effect way to develop state‐of‐the‐art scalable vector graphics (SVG)‐based HMI screens and HTML5‐based web publishing software. Customers are able to do it all on their own, without any heavy‐duty networking or web programming experience. It is all done within the familiar environment of Horner’s proven programming software (Cscape). Contributing to the global trend known as the Internet of Things (or loT), our Horner WebMI instantly connects users to their automated applications. With WebMI, you have the ability to remotely monitor and control easier and faster than ever before, all through your phone, computer, or tablet ‐ providing users with the necessary insights to grow and improve their business.

WebMI provides a remote gateway directly to many of the Horner OCS XL products. Simply by providing a network connection from the OCS, the user can choose to publish the screens that they have developed on the OCS, or they can develop independent screens to publish. The OCS acts as the Web Server, so no additional expensive computer hardware or software is required to make this remote monitoring and control possible, and now all of this can be done from the palm of your hand. To do this seamlessly, we have incorporation high‐level security algorithms like: 128 bit SSL encryption, Industry Standard Hash Security Technology as well as the ability to work within their existing IT structure, ensuring continued uptime at all times.

Our controllers have helped to make our customers' operations run effectively for decades. Now by adding our new software solution, WebMI, we will continue to keep them running; even if they are not directly in front of the controller.

With Horner WebMI, you can monitor and control plant data from the palm of your hand. Within our proven programming environment, Cscape, WebMI quickly connects users to their automated applications, and customers have the ability to remotely monitor and control easier and faster than ever before using whatever device you choose. Through your phone, computer, or tablet, WebMI provides the necessary insights to grow and improve customer's' businesses.

Before WebMI, customers had to piece together overly complex and expensive SCADA systems to deliver the ability to monitor and control systems through the internet. In addition to the initial, sometimes substantial investment in SCADA software, traditional SCADA systems also may require sophisticated PC/server hardware to house the multiple software layers. Now with WebMI, this process is simple, secure and less costly. Horner has created a system that turns each Horner controller into a web host allowing customers to access the unit directly online from whatever device they choose. The web hosting software is located in the unit's microSD card, which can also be used to log any data a customer needs to make their business more efficient and successful. Each unit can share new insights into the inner workings of your process, and they all communicate with each other.

WebMI has a FREE base package and more comprehensive  packages with modest prices based upon number of users, tags, and pages. It utilizes the new Cscape 9.70 and the latest revision of Firmware 14.14Contact us today for more information or visit us online!

Horner Canada released their latest in their leading XL seires of All-in-One Controllers: the EXL6 OCS Controller, offering enhanced resolution, and faster logic execution than the previous XL6 OCS Controller, partnered with the ease-of-use and functionality of its predecessors.

“We’re trying to improve upon what is currently in the market,” said Phil Horner, CEO Horner APG. “In doing so, we started with what we already have to offer, and made it better, creating the EXL6 controller.”

The EXL6 OCS controller is an evolution of the historically popular XL6e controller; known for its comparable size, color touchscreen and versatility. Building from the XL6e’s proven foundation, the EXL6 makes several enhancements to the overall design of this mid-range OCS controller offered by Horner such as:

  • Improved resolution on the 5.7” VGA color touchscreen at 640 x 480 pixels
  • Faster logic execution with a scan rate of 0.013 mS/K (about twice the speed as the XL6e)
  • The addition of an active serial port resulting in three ports total

Utilizing the current Cscape 9.6, Service Pack 4 and the latest revision of Firmware 14.12, the resolution and graphics on the EXL6 are more comprehensive and enhanced than on previous models. Along with better resolution and faster logic execution, the EXL6 also sees improvements in the overall screen response time – making screen transitions and overall application functions more streamlined and efficient.

“The new EXL6 OCS controller is going to make headway among competitors,” said Horner. “With the size and price of an average mid-line piece of hardware, but reinforced with the interfaces, programming, and capabilities of top-of-the-line systems, the EXL6 is going to turn heads and improve operations.

SmartBlock I/O features a variety of Analog and Specialty modules. SmartBlock I/O is designed to compliment the popular SmartStix Digital I/O family. These two I/O families can be used to expand the I/O capacity of just about any Operator Control Station (OCS) by merely a few points - or potentially thousands of points.

SmartStix I/O is an ideal terminal-block style Digital I/O system - but SmartBlock I/O is built for Analog. Like it's SmartStix cousin, SmartBlock I/O is mounted on DIN-rail, although through hold mounting is also supported for flexibility. SmartBlock can be mounted locally in the same panel as the OCS, or can be mounted remotely up to 500 meters away. SmartBlock is based on the proven CsCAN network, which uses industry-standard CAN chipsets for noise immunity and data integrity. But unlike other industrial implementation of CAN like DeviceNet, SmartBlock's CsCAN network sets the bar with its ease of configuration in the CsCAPE software.

SmartBlock has numerous convenience features...a dual CsCAN plug for easy "in & out" network connections...spring clamp removable terminal blocks for quick field wiring...indicator LEDs for power, module and network status...a hinged door for dip switch access, and much more! Check it out!

With Cscape 9.50, Horner includes a variety of features, enhancing the programming environment and user experience. Adding Tag Based Advanced Ladder Logic offers an alternate way to program controllers using tagged variables, such as “Pump_Operation,” rather than a fixed register in the target device.

Tag Based editing allows for clearer coding and ease of use for a variety of different levels coding experience. When using variables while programming with Tag Editing it’s more difficult to accidentally overlap registers, cutting down significant causes of programming errors,” says Eric Broyer, Global Product Manager for Horner Automation Group.

Along with adding Tag Based editing, Cscape 9.50 includes advancements in graphics control and functionality including: background and button gradations on 15-bit or higher color units, smoother gradient transitions on Horner’s powerful all-in-one controllers that support 24-bit color, and bitmap transparency functionality.

Data logging receives an upgrade as well, both visually on-screen and functionally. Now Historical data trending tracks data over time, and trending objects can be set to log-to and replay-from a removable media device.

In addition to the many new benefits, Cscape 9.50 supports PID Tuning for IEC environments. Now, the programmer has the capability to open a pop-up window tool that will tune a PID loop in IEC programs.
